PAIR of English Sheffield WINE COASTERS, Circa 1840 - RARE

Matched Pair of Antique Sheffield Wine Coasters made in England during the early part of the reign of Queen Victoria circa 1840. This really is a magnificent pair of Wine Coasters, decorated with a bold grape and vine motif. They have turned wood bases with a silver button in the centre for a crest or initials but never engraved. Dimensions: 5.75" in diameter and 2.5" high. Antique Sheffield is the early form of Silver plating before electricity was invented. It is made of copper with sheets of pure silver fused onto the top and bottom by heat. The article is then made in the same way as a piece of silver. In this case, the grapes and vines are made as a solid Silver shell, which is filled with lead to give it weight and substance. CONDITION, WORKMANSHIP & QUALITY are extremely fine considering age and use. $445
